Joe Vasquez Aguilar |
- Notes from his son Andy:
"In the early 1900's, my father, Joe Vasquez lived in the same small town of Atemajac, Mexico as did his cousin, Chilo. My father was orphaned as a very young child in Mexico and was taken to the the U.S. and adopted by his Uncle, Pedro Aguilar. As a young man, he worked as a dishwasher and singing waiter for his Uncle in a restaurant in Los Angeles earning seven dollars a week with an uncertain future.
"Fortunately for him, Chilo took a strong interest in him so he and Aunt Virginia traveled many times to visit Pedro trying to convince him to let my Dad come back with them to go to school in San Francisco. After many such visits, Pedro relented and my Dad was allowed to live with Chilo and Virginia while going to school to study about radio and electronics.
"This was truly a blessing as it encouraged and inspired my father after returning to Los Angeles, to continue to further his education that enabled him to obtain better employment. It was in night school that he met my mother to be, Evangeline Arguelles. This marriage produced my older brother Michael, myself, and my three younger sisters.. .Anita, Martha and Rose. This union and our lives would not have been made possible without this loving intervention by Chilo and Virginia on my dear father's behalf.
"I have many fond memories of the many visits our families had for over a half century sharing much love and laughter. I vividly recall witnessing the renewal of Chilo and Virginia's wedding vows on their fiftieth wedding anniversary in their beautiful patio garden. I give thanks to God for allowing me to be part of this extended and loving family."
